In this post, I'll explain our new lesson about 'adjective clause connectors and adjective clause as subjects in multiple clauses'.
I’ll make a modification on how I should explain every lesson. As a matter of efficiency and effectiveness I’ll provide you with two perspectives or ways on how to do the test questions. We, among teachers, usually call it as word meaning and grammar rules. First, let me explain it from the meaning perspective.
We have this question.
1. ________ is on the table has four sections.
(A) The notebook
(B) The notebook which
(C) Because the notebook
(D) In the notebook
What do you think of the answer here? Let me explain how I did it.
Saya mencoba untuk menggabungkan ekspresi pada pilihan jawaban dengan pertanyaan tersebut. Kalian bisa memperhatikannya satu persatu.
(A) The notebook is on the table has four sections.
(Notebook di atas meja memiliki empat bagian.)
(B) The notebook which is on the table has four sections.
(Buku catatan yang ada di atas meja memiliki empat bagian.)
(C) Because the notebook is on the table has four sections.
(Karena notebook yang ada di atas meja memiliki empat bagian.)
(D) In the notebook is on the table has four sections.
(Di notebook ada di atas meja memiliki empat bagian.)
Seperti yang kalian pahami, makna pilihan C and D terdengar aneh dan kurang tepat.
Pilihan tersisa adalah pilihan A dan B. Pilihan mana yang akan menjadi pilihan akhir kalian? The special thing here is that some of you might think that A is right in terms of its meaning in Bahasa Indonesia. But, the two languages may function differently.
Pesonally, I think I need more knowledge in grammar rule so that I can confidently get the right answer. This leads us to take a look at how we do it with our grammar knowledge.
The fastest way is to count how many verbs the sentence has. If it has more than one verb, we need a connector. A connector can be a coordinate connector (like and, but, so), or adverb connector (like because, even though), or relative or noun clause connector (like who, which, that).
This makes option A wrong because it doesn’t have a connector. In English, we need to have a connector to separate ideas clearly.
Option D is wrong too, because in is not a connector but a preposition, the meaning is wrong too just like it has been explained before.
Tersisa option B and C.
Seperti yang telah dijelaskan sebelumnya, option C salah in terms of its meaning. Dan pilihan yang paling benar adalah option B.
I hope that the explanation I have made here, in the blog version can help you learn more about a particular skill in TOEFL Structure Test. You can also visit our my YouTube channel to see the explanation directly and do some practices too.
